You’ve exhausted mini golf, laser skirmish and bowling… and now you are on the hunt for your family’s next activity victim.
Escape Rooms came up as a suggestion, and before jumping in head first – you have a few questions (understandable).
What is an escape room? Are they suitable for kids? Will the puzzles be too difficult for them? Totally fair questions.
If you are considering an Escape Room as your next family activity – here is everything you need to know:
What is an Escape Room?
An escape room is an interactive adventure game where players solve puzzles, find clues, and complete challenges within a themed environment.
Despite the name, players aren’t literally trying to escape. Instead, they’re working through a story-based mission that requires teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.

Do children need previous Escape Room experience?
Most children are first-time players, so choosing a beginner-friendly option is a great way to introduce them to escape room concepts. Make sure you take note of the difficulty level when booking!
Games Hosts are there to guide teams through the experience – some via text on a TV screen or others via walkie talkie to ensure everyone has access to help and guidance throughout the experience. We think that walkie talkies are best for this age group, as it not only makes them feel like the coolest secret agent ever but it also means that a human is actually responding back to them and can talk them through any difficult parts of the experience.
Which Escape Rooms are child friendly in Adelaide?
There are three escape rooms that are designed for kids in Adelaide!
The ultimate kids escape room is “Code RED” at ESC Rooms, which has a specific level you can choose when booking, that is designed just for kids. They modify the puzzles so that they are achievable for ages 8-15 years old.
In Code RED, you are a team of secret agents who are breaking into the President’s Office to find and diffuse a bomb!!! This room can be played by kids 12+ without an adult in there with them, or even younger if there is an adult in the room. This venue uses walkie talkies as their hint system.
Secondly, there is a kids escape room called “Wizard Quest” at Mindshift and is a 45 minute experience.
Lastly, “Da Vinci” at ESC Rooms was designed with families in mind. The puzzles are achievable and linear. Aesthetically, this room is also one of the best themed in Adelaide!

How long do escape rooms take?
Most escape room experiences are 60 minutes long. Although to be on the safer side, allow 75 minutes as the Games Host will generally want to brief the team before heading in!
Which skills do Escape Rooms develop?
The best thing about escape rooms is that not only are they just as fun as all the activities your kids already love, but they actually teach them useful skills at the same time. They have no idea they are actively working on their communication, problem solving and initiative skills. Perfect!!!

SO… What are you waiting for?
Choosing an escape room as your next family activity will not only make you the really cool parent for the day, but it will also give your children an hour of adventure, excitement and memories!
